Here’s some facts about Wakefield Prison

HMP Wakefield is a category A prison in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Opened in 1594 as a correction house, the prison has capacity to hold 751 high security male prisoners. The prison has been dubbed the “Monster Mansion”, due to the notorious inmates it holds.

Wings A to D are the residential units. Wing F is the segregation unit and close supervision centre. The health care centre holds inpatients.

HMP Wakefield is where the nursery rhyme “Here we go round the mulberry bush” (by R S Duncan, prison governor at the time) originated, as a mulberry bush in the exercise yard was used to exercise the female inmates in the original correction facility.

Charles Bronson, known as “the most violent prisoner in Britain” and “Britain’s most notorious prisoner”, has been held in HMP Wakefield since 2014. He was sentenced to life for armed robbery, wounding, criminal damage, GBH, false imprisonment, blackmail and threatening to kill.
