Here’s some facts about Thameside Prison
HMP Thameside is a category B men’s private prison in the Thamesmead area of London, next to HMP Belmarsh and HMP Isis. Opened in 2012, the prison has capacity to hold 900 inmates.
There are five wings, each divided into two units (upper and lower), with an average unit capacity of 110 prisoners. The first night center is on A wing (upper unit) and the IDTS wing is on A wing (lower unit). The prison has a dedicated health care unit with inpatient facilities for 20 prisoners, and a care and separation unit which has a capacity for 18 prisoners.
In 2013, shortly after the prison opened, HMP Thameside was named as one of Britain’s worst prisons with one of the most restricted regimes the HMIP had ever seen, as some prisoners spent up to 23 hours a day locked in their cells.
