HMP Reading is now closed. Prior to its closure in 2013, it held both young adults and young offenders, with some room for low security ‘open’ inmates. The prison was originally built in 1844 in the centre of Reading and was designed by the famous architect, Sir George Gilbert Scott. It is now a Grade II listed building and there are suggested plans to use the ex-prison as a tourist attraction or theatre. If you’d like to visit the former HMP Reading, please use the map on this page.
