HMP Drake Hall is a closed female prison, holding both adult and young offenders. The building became a prison in the 1960s, when it was originally used to house male inmates. However, it was changed to a women’s prison in 1974 and has remained that way ever since. It was briefly a semi-open prison in 2002, when a new perimeter fence was installed, but went back to being a closed prison in 2009. Here’s some facts about Drake Hall Prison

HMP Drake Hall is a women’s closed category prison in Eccleshall, Staffordshire. It has the capacity to hold 315 young and adult inmates.

The prison was opened in the 1960s, and was intended for male prisoners. In 1974, it was converted to a female prison. In 2002, the prison was converted to a semi-open prison while a new perimeter fence was built. It was converted back to a closed prison in 2009.

An inspection report from 2016 described the 15 residential units. Bristol, Canterbury and Norwich are general non-smoking units, some of which are double rooms. Durham, Exeter, Folkestone, Gloucester, Margate, Oxford are general units. Keele is a 19-room induction unit. Plymouth and Richmond are for women who had completed their induction. Ipswich mostly accommodates women working outside the prison. Lancaster mostly houses long-term prisoners and lifers. St David’s is a 16 single room wing for women with social care or mobility needs. A new open unit located outside the prison gate could hold up to 25 women.

Visiting hours are between 13:30 and 16:00 on Tuesdays, and between 13:30 and 15:45 on Saturdays and Sundays.
