HMP Ashfield is located in Bristol, and currently has the capacity to hold 400 inmates. It was once a young offender’s prison. However, following an unfavourable inspection report in 2013, the prison became a category C establishment for adult males instead. It currently holds those who are serving sentences for sexual offences. Here’s some facts about Ashfield Prison

HMP Ashfield is located in Pucklechurch, a village near Bristol. It opened in 1999, having been built on the site of the former Pucklechurch Remand Centre where Stephen Fry spent 3 months in 1975 for stealing the credit card of a friend of the family, and was the first private prison to hold young offenders. Following an unfavorable report, the prison was closed down in June 2013 and reopened in July 2013 as a category C establishment for adult males serving sentences for sexual offences.

HM Prison Ashfield has the capacity to hold 400 inmates. The prison is built up of two residential blocks, each made of four wings. Each wing has between 40 and 60 single and double cells, all with integrated sanitation. They also have a dining area, an association area, a servery, showers and cleaning facilities. The prison has seven cells dedicated to disabled inmates.

The prison has been privately owned by Serco since 2005, and they provide the educational services. In a report by the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) published in 2016, the prison was found to be “a well-run prison which houses prisoners safely and securely but also with dignity, humanity and respect” . The report stated that since the change of role in 2013, levels of violence and self-harm have been low.

Visits are available to prisoners at HMP Ashfield every day between 13:30 and 16:30.
